Two centuries of faith, worship and community were celebrated in Cullyfad on Sunday, 4 October, as St Oliver’s Church marked its 200th anniversary with a special Mass.
Bishop Paul Connell was the chief celebrant for the Mass, joined by Monsignor Liam Quinn of New Jersey, Fr Colman Carrigy, Fr Seán Casey, the recently retired parish priest, Fr Peter Tiernan and the current Administrator, Fr Tom Murray.
In his homily, Bishop Connell paid tribute to the generations who built the church in 1826, recognising the faith and determination of those who, despite having little wealth or political influence, established a place where the community could gather to worship and celebrate the Eucharist.
The celebration also featured music from the church choir, including a special song composed for the occasion, “St Oliver’s 200 Years”. The parish Pastoral Council was also acknowledged for organising the celebrations, along with everyone who contributed to the success of the day.
Built under Fr John O’Reilly in 1826, the church was named after St Oliver Plunkett following his canonisation in 1975.
This was a special opportunity for the people of Killoe Parish to give thanks for 200 years of faith, remember the generations who worshipped there before them, and celebrate the living parish community today.
The Diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnois congratulates all in Killoe Parish on this wonderful milestone.
