Standing proudly in the heart of Longford town, St. Mel’s Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese of Ardagh & Clonmacnois and the seat (Cathedra) of the Bishop. Dedicated to St. Mel, one of Ireland’s earliest missionaries and a nephew of St. Patrick, the Cathedral has been at the centre of diocesan life since its dedication in 1840.

For almost two centuries, St. Mel’s Cathedral has been a place of prayer, worship and pilgrimage. It is where generations have gathered to celebrate the Eucharist, receive the Sacraments, and mark the significant moments of life in faith.

A Cathedral Reborn

In the early hours of Christmas Day 2009, a devastating fire destroyed much of the Cathedral’s interior. What followed was one of the most remarkable restoration projects in Ireland, as the people of the Diocese, together with supporters from across the country and beyond, worked to restore this treasured place of worship.

After five years of careful restoration, St. Mel’s Cathedral reopened in 2014, preserving its historic beauty while incorporating outstanding craftsmanship and contemporary liturgical design. Today, it stands as a powerful symbol of hope, faith and renewal.

In this Ireland AM interview, Fr James, Administrator of St. Mel’s Cathedral, reflects on the Cathedral’s rich history, its remarkable restoration following the 2009 fire, and its continuing role as the Mother Church of the Diocese of Ardagh & Clonmacnois.

This historic video, filmed on the Feast of St. Mel in February 2011, offers a rare glimpse inside the Cathedral following the devastating fire of Christmas Day 2009. It captures an important moment in the Cathedral’s journey of restoration, as plans to rebuild this much-loved place of worship began to take shape.
