Bishop Paul Connell, Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois, was among those in attendance at the closing session of the diocesan inquiry into the cause for the beatification and canonisation of Father Willie Doyle SJ, which took place at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Mullingar.

The occasion marked an important milestone in the cause of Father Doyle, an Irish Jesuit priest who served as a chaplain with the British Army during the First World War. He became known for his courage, selflessness and dedication to caring for wounded and dying soldiers, regardless of their nationality or religious beliefs.

The closing session was presided over by Bishop Tom Deenihan, Bishop of Meath, who expressed his confidence that Father Doyle’s cause would succeed in Rome. With the diocesan inquiry now complete, the cause will proceed to the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints in Rome for further consideration.

In his address, Bishop Deenihan highlighted Father Doyle’s charity, generosity and evangelical zeal, describing his witness to those who suffered as a lesson for our own time. Father Doyle’s example of compassion and service continues to inspire people across Ireland and beyond.

The Diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnois joins in prayer as Father Willie Doyle’s cause progresses, giving thanks for his remarkable witness of faith, courage and love for others.
