This weekend, the faithful from across Ireland will gather for two cherished pilgrimages in the West that have long been at the heart of our spiritual tradition.
Annual National Grandparents Pilgrimage
On Sunday, 26th July, Knock Shrine will host the Annual National Grandparents Pilgrimage, celebrating the 6th World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. The pilgrimage will begin with the Anointing of the Sick at 2.30pm, followed by Mass at 3.00pm, with Archbishop Eamon Martin as Chief Celebrant. All are warmly invited to join this special day of grace, prayer and thanksgiving for grandparents and the elderly.
This year’s World Day carries the theme chosen by Pope Leo XIV: “I will never forget you” (Isaiah 49:15), reminding us of God’s unfailing love for every person, especially those who may experience loneliness or isolation in later life. The Holy Father encourages us to spend time with our grandparents, visit elderly neighbours, and ensure that no one feels forgotten.
Reek Sunday
Also taking place on Sunday is the annual Reek Sunday pilgrimage on Croagh Patrick, where thousands of pilgrims will make the traditional ascent of Ireland’s holy mountain in the footsteps of St Patrick. Throughout the day, Masses will be celebrated on the summit as pilgrims unite in prayer, sacrifice and thanksgiving.
Whether travelling to Knock Shrine, climbing Croagh Patrick, or joining your local parish community in prayer, may this weekend be an opportunity to renew our faith, strengthen family bonds and remember those who have handed on the gift of faith to us.
