FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
‘I am the Way’

Those who work with homing pigeons tell us
that when the birds are released they will always
circle in the air for some time to find their
bearings before they make their way home. On
our journey through life we need to find our
bearings regularly. From the first breath we take
we are making our way back to the home of the
Father.
In His final address to His friends Jesus
indicates the course we should take. In last
Sunday’s Gospel He reminded us that He is the
gate of the sheepfold. Today He tells us that
He is the Way. In other words if we desire to
find fulfilment and meaning in life we must
open our hearts and minds to His word and
try to live our lives by His values. There is no
other way. In the course of history many have
explored other paths. Castles and kingdoms
have been built on the values of time, but they
have always disappeared into the sands of time.
Pope Benedict once said that a society that tries
to organise its’ affairs without reference to God
is heading for the abyss. May we pay heed and
choose wisely on the road.
