It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Canon Owen Devaney, a devoted priest whose faithful ministry, scholarship and pastoral care touched the lives of so many throughout the Diocese and beyond.
Canon Owen dedicated his life to the service of the Church, ministering with humility, compassion and unwavering faith. Alongside his priestly ministry, he was widely respected as a historian, gifted writer, educator and storyteller, preserving the rich heritage and history of our local communities for future generations.
In recent days, many people have taken to social media to share their memories of Canon Owen. Their stories and tributes speak of a priest who was not only deeply respected, but also greatly loved. His warmth, wisdom, gentle humour and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
We commend Canon Owen to the loving mercy of God and assure his family, friends, parishioners and brother priests of our prayers at this difficult time.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Matthew 25:23
