PENTECOST SUNDAY
‘Receive the Holy Spirit’
Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof, a Polish Jew invented
Esperanto, an auxiliary International language
in the late 19th century. He dreamed of a world
without war, and he believed that the first step on
this road would be to break down the language
barrier between peoples. The experiment failed.
On this Feast of Pentecost we remind ourselves
that the language of the Holy Spirit does cross
all boundaries and speaks to all hearts. It is the
life-giving language of love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness and self-control. If people
decided to speak this language more frequently
they would renew the face of the earth. Words
create worlds. It’s interesting to note that the
Buddhist religion promotes the same approach
to living: ‘better than a thousand hollow words
is one word that brings peace’. Spirit of the living
God fall afresh on us.
