A Mass of Thanksgiving was the centrepiece of the day’s celebrations, with Bishop Paul Connell, joining bishops, priests and pilgrims in concelebrating the liturgy. The programme also included guided tours, film screenings and panel discussions, providing an opportunity to reflect on the Basilica’s history and its importance as one of Ireland’s most significant places of pilgrimage.
Officially opened in 1976, the Basilica was the vision of Monsignor James Horan, who recognised the need for a larger place of worship to accommodate the growing numbers of pilgrims visiting Knock. Designed by renowned Irish architect Dáithí P. Hanly, the Basilica was built with clear sightlines to the sanctuary and the capacity to welcome thousands of worshippers for the celebration of the Eucharist.
The Basilica was elevated to the status of a Papal Basilica by Pope St John Paul II during his historic visit to Knock in 1979, recognising its spiritual, historical and architectural significance. Since then, it has become a place of prayer, hope and renewal for millions of pilgrims from Ireland and beyond.
As the Church celebrates this significant milestone, we give thanks for all who have contributed to the life and mission of Knock Shrine over the past fifty years and pray that it will continue to be a place of welcome, healing and faith for generations to come.
