FEAST OF ST. PETER & PAUL
‘Pillars of our faith’
Knowledge may not be everything, but it
is a very necessary foundation stone in the
edifice of our Catholic faith. The past few
weeks have brought us face to face with a
cluster of feasts, highlighting some of the
central truths of this faith. We have been
afforded the valuable opportunity to reflect
on the meaning of Ascension and Pentecost,
the Blessed Trinity and Corpus Christi.
Today, Peter and Paul call to us across the
centuries, and, in their diverse ministries we
are reminded of the two essential strands that
should mark the community of believers.
Peter represents the teaching authority of
the Church. The successor of Peter, the
Holy Father, continues to be the focus of
unity, the person around whom the faith
family finds stability. The Petrine ministry
then as now is of the essence. Paul represents
the missionary outreach of the Church.
We strengthen the faith by sharing it with
others. On these two pillars the building
rests. May we always side with Peter and
reach out with Paul.
