I Am the Bread of Life
(From Carrick on Shannon Parish Newsletter)
Where to get bread? An ever pressing question
that trembles on the lips of anxious disciples.
Bread for all these people who are starving,
a multitude of people on the brink of exhaustion.
And how to satisfy their deeper hungers
Where to get bread? The question still remains
In our abundance, something still starves and yearns.
We crave fulfilment, crave and are denied.
–
And then comes One who knows all our needs,
who opens out all the secret hopes we cherish
whose presence calls our secret hungers to flourish
whose words unfold in us like living seeds
Come to me, broken, hungry, thirsty, incomplete.
I am the Bread of Life, take Me, eat and be satisfied.
