The 150th Anniversary of the discovery of the ancient Basilica of San Clemente by Father Joseph Mullooly OP, is being celebrated in Rome and in Ireland in June.
On the 2nd and 3rd of June, the Irish Dominicans in the Priory of San Clemente are honouring the work of Fr Mullooly, a native of Lehery in the Parish of Rathcline, in county Longford.
In Lanesborough, this native son of the Parish of Rathcline will be remembered on Friday the 8th, Saturday the 9th and Sunday the 10th of June. The programme of events is as follows:
Friday, 8th Juneat 8pm: Launch of book which tells the story of the archaeological discoveries and the life of Father Mullooly. An exhibition will be mounted in the Parish Hall and entertainment provided.
Saturday, 9th June at 8pm: A lecture on Fr Mullooly OP and the Irish Dominicans in Rome by Fr Paul Lawlor OP. Father Lawlor is a historian who has been conducting tours in San Clemente.
Sunday, 10th June at 11.30am: Mass of Thanksgiving in St Mary's Church. Main celebrant will be Bishop Colm O'Reilly, and the homilist will be Father Pat Lucey OP, Provincial Superior of the Irish Province of the Dominicans.
A stamp will be issued by An Post to honour the work of Fr Mullooly. This will be available in September of this year.
